A White Makeover

Whether from an interior design standpoint or a functional perspective, white has always been considered a very cool color. From a scientific standpoint, white does not absorb the suns rays as darker colors do. In fact, with white, the suns rays actually bounce back from the surface. This would obviously be an excellent color choice during the summer months because the color will help to minimize the heat produced from the glare of the sun.

For rooms that may overlook a swimming pool or other body of water, such as a lake or pond, white windows coverings, whether shades, drapes, louvers, blinds or shutters, are ideal because the water generates a glare from the sun. The blinds which reflect the greatest amount of sunshine are those with a white or metallic backing.

If it is at all practical and affordable for you, it would be ideal to change your window coverings with the seasons. During the winter months, you could use colors which would create warmth in your rooms; and during the summer, you could use white or neutral tones for your window coverings. You wouldn't need to do this for every room in your home, but merely the rooms where you and your family spend the most time.

Although there are obvious advantages of white, too much white in your room would appear stark. If you have white walls and furniture of white or muted tones, consider adding a splash of color throughout the room to make it more cozy and inviting.
