Window Shade Safety
Window shades with cords can be a safety
hazard for children. Since 1981,
approximately 400 infants and toddlers have died as a result of
accidental
strangulation for pull cords on window coverings, according to a study
by
the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Due to these
unfortunate
incidents, the CPSC has suggested that the tassel on the loop end of the
cord be cut off and that tie-downs be installed in order to hang the
cords
up high and out of the reach of children. Manufacturers have modified
the
cord systems in order to reduce the chances of injury. Even though these
changes have apparently reduced the death rate in infants and toddlers,
a
window shade cord of any type is still a risk.
Other organizations, such as the Window Covering Manufacturer's
Association
and American National Standards Institute (ANSI), have become involved
in
providing guidelines for corded window shades. They are also
instrumental in
encouraging the creation and manufacturing of devices and systems to
improve
the safety of the window shades, as well as other products. In fact a
particular brand of window shade manufactured by Comfortex actually
exceeds
CPSC safety recommendations for cord modifications. In 1996 the company
invented a shade that eliminated window shade cords all together. These
shades are very attractive and have ensured the safety in this matter
for
families throughout the country. The risk of children being strangled by
a
window shade cord has been virtually eliminated by this recent
invention.
The shade is designed with an exclusive clutch with a constant force
spring
motor to provide an accurate and safe movement for the window shade.
These
shades are offered in a wide assortment of solid colors and prints to
accommodate your room's decor.
Another system which provides a similar type of shade is the Chordless
Ultra
Hardware system. This company also designs a cordless shade which
prevents
the safety hazards to children and pets. It also provides your windows
with
clean, clear views without the distraction of cords. These shades are
raised
and lowered easily and remain level when raised and lowered.
They are offered in a wide variety of fabrics and types including the
energy
efficient single and double honeycomb styles, as well as light filtering
and
room darkening shades.
