What are window shades for?

A window shade, also known as window blinds, is basically a cover for a window.  They are usually hung on the inside in front of a window to serve functional purposes such as controlling light in a room or for privacy reasons.

Window shades come in all different fabrics and styles to choose from.  Some shades are made with slat blinds, which consists of flat slats that are horizontally placed together by a metal or vinyl string.  In doing so, the slats can be rotated and adjusted to let more or less light enter a room.  Blind shades are versatile because they can be let down to cover the window completely and still have the slats adjusted to completely not let light enter, let minimal light enter or let a lot of light enter a room.  Some examples of blind shades include Venetian blinds, miniblinds and vertical blinds. Some information about each kind is below:

  • Venetian blinds are the basic slatted blinds we see in many office buildings.  The slats for these blinds are usually made of metal or vinyl.  Sometimes, they're also made of wood--however, when made with wood, many refer to them as wooden blinds instead.
  • Miniblinds are just like Venetian blinds.  However, the slats that come on mini blinds are, of course, miniature and much narrower than the regular blinds.
  • Vertical blinds are usually made of a stiff fabric, plastic or metal and hang from a window or sliding door vertically.  They're a vertical kind of blind that can be rotated from side to side (instead of up and down) to control light in a room.

Besides blind shades, there are also solid shades available.  Solid shades can either roll or fold up to allow light in.  However, once they are put down, there's not too much you can do to control a certain amount of light in besides leaving it half down or such. These solid window shades include Holland shades (which are roller shades), woven-wood shades, pleated shades, Honeycomb shades and Roman shades.  Some information about each is found below:

  • Holland shades, also known as roller shades, are usually made of a vinyl cover that can be rolled down to cover a window.
  • Woven wood shades consists of wood, bamboo or some other natural-looking material woven together to make a shade that looks solid together in one piece.  They are usually heavier and can be rolled and tied up with decorative strings when not in use.
  • Pleated shades are made of fabric that's folded into pleats so it can be pulled up to sit flat on the tops of a window when not in use.
  • Honeycomb shades, also known as cellular shades, are very similar to pleated shades.  They, however, provide a sort of insulation system achieved by joining two or more layers at the pleats to form a compartment that allows it to trap air.
  • Roman shades are shades that can be pulled up by having a section of the shade be folded behind another higher section of the shade.  Roman shades are usually made of fabric or wood pieces woven together, such as bamboo shades.
