Roller Shades Measuring
There are three basic guidelines to consider
when measuring for roller shades: First, use a steel measuring tape
rather than a cloth tape because the cloth tape will stretch; second,
measure horizontally from left to right, and vertically from top to
bottom; third, measure and record the width first, then the length.
When measuring for blinds, you will measure differently for inside
mounted blinds than outside mounted blinds.
When measuring for an inside mount, use the following guidelines:
Measure from the top, or soffit (the exposed underside of the overhead),
to the bottom (window sill). A deduction of 1-1/8" is taken from the
width of the fabric in order for the shades to operate properly. This
creates a "light gap" of 9/16" on each side of the shade. Be exact and
measure the opening at three different places (i.e. towards the top,
towards the bottom and in the middle). Then record the narrowest of the
three measurements. Also, do not take your own deductions; the factory
will do this for you. This deduction is taken so that the shade does not
rub against the window casing.
To ensure that the fabric does not rub along the brackets when the
shades are raised and lowered, the hardware must be placed in such a way
as to cause significant light gaps at the edge of the roller shades.
This gap is generally wider with the clutch lift system than with the
spring roller. If you do not want this gap, you may want to consider an
outside mount for your shades.
When measuring for an outside mount, it is best to have the shades
overlap the window by at least 1-1/2" on each side. When there is no
window sill, the shade should overlap at the bottom of the window casing
by at least 1-1/2". You may want to add 1" to the overall width if your
fabric needs to cover a specific area because 1" is automatically
deducted from the width at the factory.
