Window Shades for Children's
Rooms The number one concern
for window treatments in children’s rooms (especially small children) is
safety. Check out the safety features of your window coverings to make
sure that they comply with the latest safety regulations. One of the
main safety precautions is to make sure that there are no dangling cords
within reach of the child.
In a nursery or small child’s room, it is essential to have window
coverings with a darkening quality to enable the child to settle down
for a nap. You should use blackout shades or blinds that do not contain
route holes.
It is a good idea to keep window treatments simple in a child's room.
They should be light, airy and simple. In a baby or young child’s room,
the window coverings should never touch the floor; shades, blinds or
shorter curtains would work better in a child's room.
Roman shades work well in a child's room since they look nice and can
fold up to reveal the entire window during daylight hours; roll down at
night.
Certain elements of window treatments such as pull cords and mini-blind
slats are very attractive to small children since they can easily grab
and pull them. A child only needs to reach up and grab a pull cord,
thereby putting the child in a potentially dangerous situation. Thus, it
is imperative that you make sure any potentially dangerous conditions
are avoided at all costs. Do not put beds, cribs, shelves, changing
tables or other furniture near a window where a child may be in danger.
As you know, small children are very curious, and a very small child or
baby will automatically reach for the nearest item.
An old-fashioned roller shade is often a good choice for a baby’s
nursery because they can be obtained in light blocking versions, and
they can be raised when the baby is not sleeping, thereby allowing the
natural sunlight to filter into the room. Roller shades are simple and
can be created in attractive prints that will look nice in a baby or
small child’s room.
If fabric is used for the window treatments, it will look attractive to
continue the fabric pattern with other items in the room. This may
include pillows, quilts, bed skirts, lampshades, etc.
Since babies have an extreme curiosity and their senses should be
stimulated, it is a good idea to use colors and shapes in innovative
ways. You may use details such as borders, valances, ribbons ties and
other items to create interesting window treatments.
